from Matt Hyde, CEO
One of the benefits of being CEO of West Marine is
being able to live right by Monterey Bay in California.
My wife and I have lots of guests who come to visit, and
one of our favorite things to do is to take them out on our
Catalina Capri sailboat or paddling in our kayaks.
The other day, I was sailing with my seven-year-old
goddaughter and her parents, and we saw a splash
out of the corner of our eyes. We all turned and saw a
humpback whale come completely out of the water. It
was one of those amazing sights that brings into focus
not only the joy of recreating on and around the water,
but also helps us understand the importance of caring
for the marine environment.
We have a responsibility as one of largest marine retailers
in the U.S. to conserve marine resources and reduce
our impact on the environment. In the coming year, our
sustainability efforts will be centered on the following:
1. Develop Pure Oceans
into the leading brand of
environmentally preferable boating products that are
safer for the user and the environment.
2. Support youth boating and marine environmental
organizations in the communities where we live and work.
3. Educate and inspire our Customers and Associates
to clean up our oceans, lakes and rivers on June 8,
World Oceans Day, and throughout the year.
4. Reduce our carbon footprint and minimize the waste
we add to the landfill.
Join us on this journey so future generations can enjoy
the beauty and exhilaration of boating, fishing, paddling
and humpback whales.
